OMG this place is awesome, on my travels to Beaufort I found out bout this local fave from a friend and become a fan since, shame I live halfway across the country or else I'd be there every lunch time to grab my fave 'The Salvation' It defiantly those local favorite type places, kind of a hole in the wall joint next to the highway but those are always the best :) The seating is limited so if go during a peak lunch hour it would best to take it to go.

So many people feel like sandwiches are boring. Clearly, they have never experienced Alvin Ord's. When my parents moved to the Beaufort area more than a decade ago, we visited Alvin's per a local's recommendation. It is a little hole in the wall that we never would have visited otherwise, but boy was it life changing. The sandwiches served up in this little shop are to die for - they feature homemade bread (French or wheat) with melted cheese and butter, LOTS of meat, and perfectly-allotted garnishes. I always get the medium 'Salvation' and leave a happy and filled man. It's a sizeable sandwich, and rumor has it that a monk blesses all the bread (is this sandwich my salvation?). The shop is adorned by cute little monk figurines, so perhaps there is truth to said rumor. My mom is a big fan of the sliced turkey. We also get a bag of chips and a soda. They have real vanilla and cherry syrups that they add to the soda, so I always get a vanilla diet coke, with the crushed ice of course. Helpful hint - call in your order about 10-15 minutes in advance and then you get to bypass the line when you get there! Also note that the staff are usually rather unfriendly, but in a "we're busy and don't have time to put on our fake southern charm" attitude. And in a way, that just adds to the unique charm that is Alvin Ord's.

Pretty good sandwiches but a little pricey. I'm not quite sure if the sandwiches are really good or if there just are no other really good restaurants in Beaufort to compare it to. I think this is the best in the area. Also, I agree with the others who say the place is annoyingly small. That is what really kept me from going there more.

Delicious! One of my favorite places in Beaufort!

I miss this place so much. The bread is fantastic. When I lived in Charleston everyone was going nuts over Schlotzky's and in my opinion it just don't compare! Even though there are fewer types of breads and toppings, Alvin Ord's tastes much better. Get the club. Get larger than you think you need. You'll want more. Mail me one while you're at it.

This was one of the best sandwiches I ate in a while... Made from scratch french bread , fresh carved roast beef... People my age in BFT grew up eating here so there definitly something special about this place..not the prettiest place but i think that along with the brown bags and wax paper wrappers adds to something that you cant get at a subway

It's consistently good! Whatever you order will be tasty and the bread is scratch made which is awesome. Just wish the restaurant was bigger and cleaner. Also, I would love if they came up with more unique sandwich items.

You can't go wrong here! This has always been my favorite sandwich shop...Even when it was in the tiny building downtown. Whenever I go back to Beaufort, I always stop in for a sandwich.

Great sandwich, a little greasy but that is to be expected with 4 types of cheese. Service was a little slow but worth the wait. Seating is very limited to try to go at non-peak times.

I grew up in Beaufort, SC, and I am here visiting for my nephew's graduation. I'm not scared to tell you that it's been about 17 years since I moved away after graduating myself. Only family events bring me back here. When the occasion does arise, there are two places that are musts and Alvin Ord's is one of them. I have lived and visited many other places in the country now, but I will always be partial to this sandwich God's 200 square foot empire. Alvin Ord's is celebrating 25 years in business this year, and I can't say I am surprised. I have seen many a start-ups come and go in this fickle, little town, but they have got the staying power. They don't have any room to grow or for customer's stand, but they have staying power. That can only mean one thing: people come for the food. Their bread is brilliantly delicious. It's similar to Schlotzsky's, if you have had the pleasure, but with a little less corporate love baked in. Nope, it's got the much sought after hometown love. It tastes fresher and hasn't lost that lovely crunch around the edges. Actually, there are a smidgen of Alvin Ord's in Texas, and I can't say for certain that they are related. But, word is, a former business associate of the founders of Schlotzsky's had a falling out with them and started Alvin Ord's. There is no real connection between the small Texas towns that host Alvin Ord's and this Port Royal, S.C. treat unless you count very similar sandwiches and the same, very uncommon name as being no real connection. If you figure it out, let me know. It's such great fun to surprise your family or coworkers with a big round sandwich, cut it up like a pizza pie and serve. Of course, that is a large; small and medium sizes are also available for the loners and the finicky. They have your choice of bread and just about any sandwich meat your carnivorous heart desires. They also have a veggie option with three cheeses and several salads. The cheese is put on before the bread is toasted, so it's warm and melty.....and mmmmmmm in your mouth. They even have horseradish packets, which, if you haven't tried it, should be your next endeavor. It doesn't pack the punch that you might think, so give it a try even if you are a spiceaphobic. Definitely plan on standing in line, paying in cash, and devouring your sangwich.

If you are in the mood for a sandwich, by all means head on over to Alvin Ord's. It is by far the best place to get a sandwich in Beaufort. It's the best place I have ever gotten a sandwich to be quite honest. It can get super busy during lunch so I'd advise anyone to call in their order ahead of time. Their sandwiches are hearty and the round french bread they use is so tasty. The sandwiches are huge so be prepared to save half the sandwich for later. I want to say that they don't take credit cards so bring cash just in case i'm right about that. They do have an ATM in the place if you forget.

All i can say is YUM! If you like firehouse or a good hot deli sandwich, you'll love this place. At first glance the outer facade doesnt say much, at Alvin Ord's it's whats inside that count. My friend and both ordered the medium combo. I thought it was a little high priced for a deli combo at $10.50 until i was handed my bag. The med sandwich is huge. You could easily make this two meals as i did. Most def will go back. Help support a local small business.

Best place to get a sandwich in the Lowcountry...and its tucked away in the most unsuspecting location. Medium salvation on french, all the way....ummm, yes please!

This is a great sandwhich shop! My husband doesn't like their bread, but I think it is fantastic!

Had a small sandwich and it was huge. Had the tuna and it was amazing. Not a ton of seating but quaint and cool small feel to it, worth it to have these amazing sandwiches.

  • Dennis D.

This is a very good sandwich. Don't let the outside appearance scare you into driving by. The workers are always extremely nice and we've eaten here several times and never left disappointed. If you're in the mood for something good stop here for a pleasant surprise.

A hot sandwich shop which appears as a simple whole in the wall, off the highway place...but hey, those are the BEST places. Once again, this was my second time at this eatery (referring to my visit at Dockside). Making a selection was easy because I really enjoyed the first sandwich I got here, which was the Beaufort Philly. Last time, I got a LARGE ($12.00), which in fact should not be called a large. It should be called size Jumbo Super Duper Uber. I ate probably a 1/4 of the sandwich, left it in my hotel refrigerator...sad. Did I mention that at times, your eyes will burn if you stay in that place too long. Onions, who would of thought. Second time around, I considered the MEDIUM ($6.90), but I remember last time. The SMALL ($5.25) was sufficient because I was still very much full after eating 3/4 of the sandwich. Maybe it's the bread...take it from me, it's good. If possible, I'd go there tomorrow, pick up a Small for the plane trips home. I wonder what it tastes like room temperature. Eh.

This classic sandwich shop is Beaufort at its best! The sandwiches are wonderful and I constantly crave them. My personal favs are the Turkey Club and French Dip on wheat. The breads are fresh and unbeatable. I could probably eat there every day!

  • Patty J.

Gosh, the sandwiches at this place are awesome. The biggest size are so big, my hubbie and I could share one. Also, the bread is so fresh. I love this place.

  • Robert G.

Order a large only if you are hella hungry or sharing. The sandwhiches come on this round bread which is tasty in itself, but the sandwhiches are excellent. The sides are small, but they are cheap, plus the sandwhich is the true spolight and is filling enough. I only got the medium and i'm a big eater. Only problem was that there must have been pepper or something in the air while we waited for our food, but our eyes were tearing and burning. We wanted to eat there, but had to settle for the hotel room cause it was uncomfortable. The old couple waiting beside us confirmed there was something in the air and not just us being pansies. If it's not a hot day, get the food and enjoy it outside. I just hope the pepper thing was just that day cause this place is definitely good eats.

Love the bread here and the sandwiches are huge! One of the best sandwich shops in Port Royal

  • Christopher L.

Yeah!!!! Just moved into town and found my favorite sandwich shop. Homemade bread was delicious. I had the turkey club and wife had a salvation. You really don't need anything bigger then a small, unless you want leftovers. The whole staff were very nice and service was quick! Must eat here if you never have!

  • Mark B.

Alvin Ord's is really good! The bread is made in house and reminds me of Schlotskys if you have ever been. The bread holds up to the weight of all the quality meat and cheese that is put on the sandwich. We ordered the special and the pastrami. Both were excellent. Definitely a great choice for a very tasty deli style sandwich. I would reccomend take out because there is not much seating. It does not look like like much from the outside but don't let that fool you. Alvin Ord's is worth the trip.

Okay, I was stationed in Beaufort for 3 years, and never came across this location. I came back up for a site visit, to meet and greet with my crew that are working on the Marine Corps Air Station, and we wandered out to this small hole in the wall. I'm told the turkey is the best seller, however always go with the signature sandwich. My next trip back to Buford, I'm coming back here again

Alvin Ord's is a Beaufort staple. It's been around for longer than I can remember and a must have single time I'm in town. Where do I even start. The bread is a small, medium, or HUGE (feeds at LEAST two!) round loaf that is crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. The sandwiches are piled high with fresh ingredients and sent through the oven so the cheese is melty and the bread gets a good crisp. My go to is the Turkey Club with jalapeno bacon. The jalapeno bacon is not to spicy, even for those with a mild tongue, but gives just that perfect flavor to accompany this delicious sandwich. Some other good ones are The Salvation or Roast Beef. You can't get Alvin Ord's without a Cherry Coke. The cherry is added by the sweet ladies behind the counter. Get a little syrup or a lot! Alvin Or'ds is always busy. My suggestions is to call it in ahead of time and eat on the front porch.

I remembered this place from 20 years ago and how good it was. It was enough to make me look for it (found it on Yelp) by doing a search for "sandwich shop" and hunt it down when we were passing through town as tourists. My memory was correct; it was delicious. My bf is a non-meat eater so his only option was a cheese sandwich but other than that it's a great place for everyone and he LOVED his sandwich. The line was really long (you can call your order in and that seems to be a good option) but the staff was efficient and the sandwiches soon came out. We ate inside as it was too hot outside but others ate on the covered deck with the ceiling fans. Now that I live somewhat in the area we will be back! It's for sure worth trying; you'll probably like it.

My husband and I are renting in Port a Royal while our home is being built. Every time we drove by there was a line and a lot of cars. Today we finally stopped to see what all the fuss was about. I now understand! The French bread is I feel what makes this sandwich. Wow. We both had the roast beef and it was lean and tasty. It definitely will be one of our favorite places to stop on the way to the beach for the day.

  • Teri-Lyn T.

I absolutely loved the atmosphere there and the overall welcoming feeling the employees conveyed to each customer I felt like a regular there because they treated me as such. Now about these sandwiches. O.M.Gosh they were good! I got a medium and only ate half so unless you're sharing a small will suffice. I got the salvation and my husband enjoyed the Beaufort philly. Definitely will be returning

My husband and I went here for lunch today :) I had the turkey sandwich on french. It was delicious! Hands down the best sandwich you'll find in beaufort/port royal. The bread was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside (toasted) it had the perfect amount of turkey and condiments! And it's REAL turkey! Not that nasty stuff you get at subway. I would definitely recommend this little sandwich shop and will be back soon!

You can never go wrong with Alvin Ords! I love any and all of their sandwiches! But my 2 favorites are the Salvation! And Turkey Club! And can't forget Pink Lemonade! A lil pricey but WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

I challenge anyone to find a better sandwich than Alvin Ords. I was born and raised here, and even after moving away - I have yet to find a better sandwich. If you're a vegetarian like me, get the cheese salvation with jalapenos, you won't be sorry.

This is the best sandwich place in the world. I moved away because my husband got orders and I can't find a place like this.

Yummy, yummy, yummy! Great variety, good prices. Expect a line at 2pm the line was almost out the door, but it didn't take very long. One of the best sandwiches we have ever had. We ate the Rachel and the Cuban.

Another great experience at a local Beaufort hot-spot! This is by far my favorite place to eat when we come to town. The turkey club is fabulous, and the small is a perfect size for a filling lunch. Would highly recommend for a lunch date- just call your order in if you don't have time to wait. This place is always swamped with people trying to get some good food.

  • David Z.

It just doesn't get better then a Alvin Ords roast beef sandwich on French bread. Best sandwiches in Beaufort by far. Just a tip you might want to call ahead before you get there, otherwise you'll be in for a long wait. Another tip, I always get a large because it's good for two meals.

Been wanting to come here for a long time. Heard so many great things and they were true!! This place really hits the spot when you're sick of all the chains out there. Friendly service and great good.

  • Laurie C.

3:30 was the perfect time to come... No wait :) Last time I tried to come around lunch time and it was slammed! Great sandwiches, though they are a bit on the expensive side for what you are getting. Will probably be back in the future.

    (4)
  • Shelley D.

I grew up eating these sandwiches. Whenever I go home to visit, this is literally the first thing I go for! My dad even gets me one before I get into town so it's there waiting for me if I get in late. Best sandwiches ever created.

  • Pat M.

Best sandwich shop in town but be hungry or share. Homemade bread. Not a lot of seating

    (4)
  • Ray Q.

This place is very unique and the sandwiches are absolutely tasty. The different options that you can add or types of meats have been carefully selected to provide the best taste. The bread is fresh and I would come back when in this area. The sandwiches come in different sizes and I would lean toward a regular sized sandwich compared to their bread so you get plenty of food. The other thing here is making sure your order is understood and clarify your order at the register before paying. The price is above average for most sandwiches. 3 stars Food taste is 5 stars Presentation 3 stars

    (4)
  • James T.

Food = 3 (the original bread is nice, but it's just a sandwich) Price = 2 (it's just a sandwich... the pricing is way out of line) Experience = 4 (nice people and quick service) They get a 2 only for the overpriced cost. Medium sandwich/chips/small drink = $11.00... really?

    (2)
  • Raul A.

I read the reviews...and tried not to let it sway my expectations much... Unfortunately I ordered a turkey and roast beef and received a mighty tasty looking Ruben...but that's not what I ordered so when I went back up, there was some confusion and I got a little bit of an attitude of "That's what he ordered" but in the end they remade the sandwich for me. Wasn't a fan of their wheat bread...spongy and cake-like with little flavor. The sandwich had potential so I'm marking the 2 stars for now on the following: Poor attuitude at the counter Spongy cake-like Wheat bread I'll try this place again and go with the white French bread option.

    (2)
  • Jordan M.

Absolutely love this place! Miss it when my husband and I left Beaufort. Their fresh French bread rolls are sooo delicious! I recommend the pastrami. The size of small is enough to fill you and medium & large are enough for leftovers! Best sandwich shop in town! Always busy.

    (4)
  • Sam B.

Really good sandwiches definitely worth the price! They have lots of selections and ingredients to chose from. The sandwiches have 3 different size options that are very well portioned. They're the best Beaufort has to offer sub wise!

  • Ralf L.

Great 'round' bread. Excellent Salvation sandwich. Moist and plenty of meat and other toppings. Forget the chain sub-stores and visit this place.

  • Garrison F.

Best sandwich in Beaufort. If you only have 3 meals in Beaufort this HAS to be one of them. Go with cherry coke- flavor is added in house. Parking lot can get packed at peak hours (lunch). EAT HERE

Best in Beaufort! Nom nom nom Seriously LIFE-CHANGING sandwiches

Great sandwich shop! Place may not look like much but certainly some of the best sandwiches I've ever had! call ahead if you want to get in and out quickly... Their bread is made fresh and either the French or Wheat is phenomenal! Must try!

One of my earliest memories as a child is my family sharing a large Alvin Ord's sandwich. I've been eating there for over 25 years. It was a frequent lunch spot in high school and I can't be home visiting my mom in Beaufort and not have Alvin Ord's. A few of my favorite sandwiches are the cheese salvation, ham salvation, roast beef and turkey, sliced turkey, and turkey club. The best part about the sandwich is that they toast it so it is warm. I'll be home in a few weeks and can't wait for this and a shrimp burger from the shrimp shack! A word to a first timer. The large sandwich is huge. You can share it with 4 people. I always get a small, but I know some people that order a medium. Do NOT order a large for one person! Another favorite of mine is their cherry coke- they add the cherry- you tell them if you want a splash, medium amount, or a ton. I don't usually drink soda (maybe one a month), but I'll get a cherry coke when I eat here.

They are able to take credit cards/ debit cards now. Their bread is made fresh every morning and absolutely mouth-watering! I've been patronizing this restaurant for years! This place is wicked small, almost annoyingly so. But, the food is so worth it. Their meat is always flavorful and fresh. The lettuce/tomatoes they use are so fresh. I think they slice everything there. Price is higher than Subway, but quality is exponentially better. There's outside seating for sunny days.
